The Abita Springs Trailhead Museum presents the Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America” - A Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit

The Abita Springs Trailhead Museum presents the Hometown Teams exhibit Kickoff and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at Abita Springs Park on Saturday, November 19th at 10AM.
State, parish, and local officials will join coaches, teachers, and the public in celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit through the sharing of stories about the impact of participation in team sports upon their lives.
Sports have penetrated nearly all levels of American culture, including art and literature. The dynamism of sports — the color and excitement of a game and the grace and beauty of an athlete’s performance — often makes for great art. The complex relationship between sports and American culture inspires us to explore how sports reveal our character and humanity as well as the drama that occurs in the triumph of victory and the agony of defeat.
Sports influence the way we talk, what we buy, the food we eat, and the media we experience. This exhibit helps us better understand these influences in a way that is instructive and highly entertaining.
Hometown Teams has been made possible in Abita Springs by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Hometown Teams is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
The Trailhead Museum is proud to sponsor Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America, which will run from November 19, 2016 through January 1, 2017. During the exhibit, the Museum’s hours will be 10AM – 4PM Thursdays through Mondays; closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas but open New Years Day.
