The duties of the Planning & Zoning Director are to coordinate and administer the affairs and duties of the zoning office, Planning Commission, and Historic Commission. The Zoning office maintains all official records, necessary and incidental, pertaining to the administration of the zoning ordinance and its related bodies.
 
The Planning & Zoning Division works with the public and town officials to evaluate and formulate plans for the development of the town.
 
Planning & Zoning issues permits. The building inspector performs inspections for all building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work performed within the corporate limits.

*If your property is zoned Historic, you will need to get approval from the Historic Commission before applying for a building permit.  To confirm the zoning of your property please call (985) 892-0711, option 4.

Important Information

You need a building permit for work including but not limited to the following:

  • Whole House Generators

  • Ancillary Buildings

  • Accessory Buildings

  • Fences 7' and taller

  • Swimming Pools

  • Add or remove walls

  • Change the use of a room (such as by converting a garage to a living room)

  • Change the piping in your house

  • Re-roof your house

  • Demolish a portion of your house

You DO NOT need a building permit for the following: 

  • Adding kitchen cabinets

  • Replacing certain kitchen appliances

  • Installing floor coverings

  • Erecting a fence under 6' 11"* (COA Required)

  • Repainting your house* (COA Required)

*If you live in the Historic District you must submit a Certificate of Historic Appropriateness.

Historic Meetings

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM in the Abita Springs Town Hall, 22161 Level Street.

All historic applications are due 10 days prior to the meeting date. 

Important Information

You need a COA to make an changes to your property including but not limited to new construction,  remodels, additions, and fences.
