Certain Older Gas Connectors May Be Dangerous

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Gas connectors are corrugated metal tubes used to connect gas appliances in your home to fuel gas supply pipes. Some older brass connectors have come apart, causing fires and explosions resulting in deaths and injuries.

These older brass connectors have a serious flaw in how their tubing was joined to their end pieces. Over time, the end pieces can seperate from the tubing and cause a serious gas leak, explosion, or fire. To our knowledge, these dangerous uncoated brass connectors have not been made for more than 20 years, but many of them are still in use. The older these connectors get, the greater the possibility of failure.

Although not all uncoated connectors have this flaw, it is very difficult to tell which ones do. Therefore, any uncoated brass connector should be replaced immediately with either a new plastic-coated brass or new stainless steel connector. Connectors can wear out from too much moving, bending, or corrosion. Connectors should always be replaced whenever the appliance is replaced or moved from its location.

WARNING: Only a qualified professional should check your connector and replace it if needed. Don’t try to do this yourself!

Moving the appliance, even slightly, whether to clean behind it or to inspect its gas connector, can cause the complete failure of one of these older weakened connectors, possibly resulting in a deadly fire or explosion.

If you have any questions, please contact your plumber.

Corrugated cardboard is thick and has a wavy middle layer. Moving boxes are usually made from corrugated cardboard. Corrugated cardboast must be free of contaminates such as packing material, styrofoam and plastic. The boxes must then be folded and flattened. If the cardboard will fit into the recycling container then place it in the container. If it will not fit, then place it next to the container.

Paint and solvent containers
Scrap metal (nails, screws, gutters,etc.)

Plastic…You need to check three things to find out if a plastic item is recyclable at the curb: the size, the type of plastic, and the contents.
1. Size - Only plastic containers less than 5 gallons in size are recyclable.
2. Type of Plastic - Once you’ve determined that your item is the right size, check the bottom for a number with the recycling arrows around it. The number indicates the type of plastic that was used to make the container. Only containers made from plastics numbered #1 through #7 plastic can be recycled.
3. Contents - If the container contained motor oil, bug spray, weed killer, adhesives, paints or solvents, it cannot be recycled no matter what type of plastic it was made from.
Examples of Recyclable Plastic…Please remember to rinse the containers.
